Ethereum Gaming Hub Shift: Why Mainnet Titles Are Making a Comeback
Ethereum.org rewrote its gaming hub. The revised page now leads with mainnet titles rather than layer-2 solutions — a reversal of the narrative that dominated the last three years of onchain game development.

For token holders and builders tracking where liquidity, state, and user activity are migrating, the framing matters: the foundation is signaling that L1 gaming is no longer a cost-prohibitive dead end.
Mainnet Returns As A Viable Surface
The page cites Asphodel as the working example. Asphodel: Prologue — a roguelike autobattler from Asphodel Studios — is currently in playtesting on Ethereum mainnet. Players mint a Taruchi, train it, and send it into onchain arena combat. The same studio ships Kamigotchi, a pet-strategy title on Initia, where gas fees are recorded as protocol-side revenue.
That dual deployment illustrates the fee question the page deliberately leaves open. Kamigotchi treats every transaction as an intake stream. Over on Starknet, the Realms.World ecosystem runs through the Cartridge Paymaster, zeroing out gas for the end user. No verdict is issued — both models are presented as live production choices with different trade-offs for token economics and user retention.
The underlying signal: Ethereum L1 throughput and fee compression have reached a point where fully onchain games can run without defaulting to an L2.
Ronin's Rebrand And Inflation Cuts
Ronin headlines the ecosystem section. The chain hard-forked at block 55,577,490 on May 12, transitioning from a standalone sidechain to an OP Stack layer 2. EigenDA handles data availability; Ethereum supplies settlement and finality.
The economics were reworked in tandem. RON emission dropped from above 20% annualised to sub-1%. Marketplace fees on the network rose from 0.5% to 1.25%. For RON holders, the supply-side compression is the core variable to watch — lower emission tightens float, while higher fee capture partially offsets reduced validator rewards. The network spent roughly 10 hours offline during the migration, a window its co-founder described as "hibernation."
Ronin's original sidechain architecture was the vector for the $625 million bridge exploit in March 2022. The OP Stack shift moves validation and finality under Ethereum's security umbrella, which changes the risk profile but does not eliminate it — bridge custody patterns on L2s remain a persistent surface area for auditors.
NFT Mechanics Over Marketplace Hype
The revised page's NFT section skips ownership debates entirely and focuses on contract-level design. Three models stand out:
- Loot Survivor (Beasts). Species, tier, level, health, combat type, and defeat history live fully onchain. The first player to kill a named Beast mints it; that Beast then persists across every other player's dungeon. Each subsequent defeat updates its metadata. Rewards accrue to the owner. No central server coordinates the loop.
- Gigaverse (ROM NFTs). These function as manufacturing capacity — factories that generate materials and resources over time. The asset is productive infrastructure, not a static collectible.
- Cambria (on Abstract). "Core" NFTs allow minting of pets and skins directly through gameplay rather than a storefront purchase flow.
The common thread: state is stored onchain, rewards are contract-enforced, and no intermediary server controls distribution. That structure matters for anyone modelling long-term asset velocity and sink mechanics in GameFi economies.
For investors benchmarking these ecosystems against broader equity and earnings data, tools like stock screeners with valuation metrics can help contextualise how publicly traded gaming companies compare to onchain-native capital flows — different pipes, but the same question of whether revenue scales with user acquisition cost.
What To Monitor
- Asphodel's mainnet playtest metrics: gas cost per session, retention curves, and whether L1 latency introduces friction at scale.
- RON emission schedule over the next two quarters — sub-1% inflation only holds if the cap is not revisited through governance.
- The fee model split: revenue-from-gas (Kamigotchi) versus zero-fee retention (Realms.World). Track which produces higher onchain DAU over 90-day windows.
- Loot Survivor's Beast metadata growth rate — a proxy for how fast onchain state bloat becomes a cost issue on mainnet.
